Gel Question

Just bought a Cougar FTD that was previously wrapped. The gel is in great shape, but has cuts from everywhere the vinyl guy trimmed the wrap. It might not be a big deal on a white boat, but it is Malibu red. Every scratch shows. Tried wet sanding one spot and it seems like Ill have to cut too deep remove the scratch. I know I can get the pre mixed gel from parts. Ive fixed deep gouges and scratches on my previous Sabre, so I understand the process. The question is, can I just cut the scratches a little deeper and apply clear gel? It looks like Malibu red is black base, red flake in clear. So, am I thinking right that surface repairs can be done with clear? Im gonna call the factory tomorrow for some insight, but was wondering if anyone on here has worked with the Malibu gel before. Thanks in advance for any help.

Well good news is that they(those fine scratches) fade with time as the dust(white color) comes out. Bad news is Malibu red can be hardest color to redo. Red is suspended in black and depth hard to match. I would talk to factory before you do anything.C.O.D. Jr. III

The only thing worse than Malibu Red on repairing is Malibu Blue. The scratches are common on wrapped boats years ago and most wrappers are better now than years ago on wraps and cutting gelcoat. The gel coat is usually shallower than the cuts and the repairs are way more intense than minor gel repair. You can improve the looks by cleaning the cuts and gelling them then finishing carefully. They will still be visible and detectable to those who know what you have and not at a distance.

BCB, the second part of your answer is what I want to here more about. Id like perfection, but I understand it would be a major project. Just making them a lot less noticeable would be satisfactory. Simple thinking tells me that if I fill small scratches with clear then sand down and polish, they may not be perfect, just a lot less noticeable.

Try a black sharpie. Unfortunate that a guy putting on a wrap messed up a nice boat.

There is one OLD trick you can try. Clear nail polish, just use enough to fill the scratch, cover it while it is still wet with Scotch tape till it dries,. Remove the tape and you polish around it after it has dried for a day or two. Then of course seal it with Pro Tec. That may work for you. Pro-Tec Productswww.protecproducts.com
