realistically, they havent been proven yet, not in my opinion anyway. if it were and accord, 4-wheeler, motorbike etc then no worries but the outboards are relatively new. Honda most certainly has the means to build an incredibly well built product but there have been others who dip into different markets and quickly find out that it isnt feasible and then the end user ends up paying the real price of admission.

Honda was the first to make 4 stroke outboards. I owned two of them in the mid 90s. They never missed a beat and were in the water year round. Honda dipped into the market well before any others.

Honda has been building 250 outboards since 2012 I believe. Never heard of any reliability issues with them though I’m sure there are some. They are a big player in the saltwater market and on government vessels. Only knock I have heard on the 250 is with speed. I’d be curious to hear how Paul Elias’ Lynx is running with his Honda. Him and Wiggins were in Cougars last year and I think Jesse is running a Cougar again. If speed is what you’re after it’s probably not the outboard for you but if you’re looking for reliability it’s got to be in the conversation

They are very popular saltwater as well as those “super”pontoons nowadays. The rep at a boat show told me basically it is an Accord engine modified for marine use.

I would not hesitate at all on a Honda outboard, regardless of size. They may be slower, but the reliability is without question. The dealer network is smaller, but that may be because they never need to be worked on!

Talk to the guys at Skyline Marina (336-921-3783) They have sold a bunch of them. Also rigged Pauls boat and I think Jesse Wiggins boat too.

Ive seen 100hp plus motors on Saltwater boats on the east coast for a decade or two. Vermont runs them on their State patrol boats one of which goes out of our marina. Ive never seen it worked on other then to winterize it each year. Im guessing they are pretty reliable. I had a bad experience with Honda back in the mid 90s with my wives Accord and Ill never buy one again. Crappy customer service by home office on what turned out to be a big recall (frost plug popping out dumping oil). But that was the only issue we ever had with the two we owned.
