I havent fished in a tournament in a LONG time. But I believe that at least B.A.S.S. has a 250 limit. I have seen local tournaments advertised here and some had 250 also. Oly BASS and FLW, which includes those Federations, in most cases. Independent events usually allow HP matching the boat.

well, I plan to buy a 300 unless something falls through and then I will just ask for an exception I guess.

I would figure opinions would change, seeing how many boats have an unlimited hp rating or up to and including the lowly 300

Limiting HP probably saves on BASS and FLW insurance as larger motors are not going to help with safety. It also helps, at least a little bit, to save anglers some money in an awful expensive sport.
