HPDI Trouble, help please?

Get a second opinion. Replacing those is _not_ a $2,500.00 job. Someone is pulling your leg. $250.00 I would believe. If it were me, and they wanted to claim that such a bushing failure (which makes the motor unusable) is a non-warranty item, I would make certain that I never bought another Yamaha product of any kind and I would also make it a point to make as much noise as possible, as this is not reasonable, IMHO. Who in their right mind would spend nearly $20,000 on an outboard knowing that it had a normal maint. cost of $2500 to replace bushings that are going to wear out within 3 years? How many hours do you have on it? Im curious as I have a low hour 2005 250 HPDI on my Cougar…. Ill be inspecting this area closely this weekend…. do you have any pics? tc

Thank you and I will call you today. The dealer told me it will cost 1000.00 in labor and 1500 in parts. I did talk with a Yamaha Rep to voice my displesure with this diognoses. Its hard for me to believe that a engine manufacture would market a boat that requires 2500.00 of routine maintenance within a 3 or 4 year window of ownership or less that 400 hours of usage. The Yamaha customer rep did tell me to fax him a copy of the invoice for their review if it turns out to be a non warranted repair. This is Kotas (JackAll) 06 Puma. The Yamaha Rep did say that if the pros fish “Skinny” water it will rapidly accelerate the wear and tear of these bushings but the bottom of the Puma doesnt show any evidence of that and Kota really isnt a skinny water type pro. He is very careful with his equipment. I have fished with him on the Potomac River and know this for a fact. It is still Yamahas position through that unless there is overwelming evidence that it was a component failure it is a regular maintenance item. This is only the second time I have used this particular dealership. They replaced my lower unit after the second thrust washer failure. The first dealership I used for the first thrust washer failure didnt install the thrust washer when they re-installed the prop so I here ya about dealerships. Some are good and honest and some are not. I dont know of any other Yamaha repair shops within a 50-70 mile radius of me. I will get pictures and post them but it wont be today. Its raining and we are supposed to get 2 inches before noon. To check it just trim the engine about half way up and remove the motor toter. Shake the engine from side to side. If the bushings are worn or damaged will will see excessive movement in the upper motor mount area. On the lower end you will see a larger than normal gap between the tube and where it attaches to the lower unit. On a side note, I spent three years in Rice Lake WI (82 to 85), when I was on active duty. I loved it but I DO NOT miss the winters, Ha, Ha. We dont know the issue on the bushings, though it is an item that one would need to check occasionally. The entire mounting system, including the jackplate should be routinely lubed and inspected. You right in that Kota is not a skinny water angler, And he does care for his equipment. It will only be subject to the rough water that these guys have to compete in and not usually overall abuse, though it will be subject to routine hard use. BCB

I just replaced all 4 motor mounts on a merc 200 xri. It took roughly 3 hours in my basement. An hour to pull the powerhead, exhaust plate, to get to the upper mounts, an hour to clean the gasket surfaces and pull the lower mounts, and an hour to put humpty-dumpty together again. A dealer can do this faster. It certainly ought not be a $2500 deal. If it is, it _certainly_ ought to be covered under warranty. You can pull the powerhead, and hang it above the midsection and not even disconnect any cables.2008 Pantera Classic2014 Mercury Pro XS 200
