Hummingbird Blues

Both units are not working. The front unit 885C powers up then shuts off as soon as loaded. It was staying on for varying lengths of time. Now it hardly stays on long enough to see the depth. The console unit only reads 2 most of the time. Side imaging still works fine but down imaging doesnt go past 2. Any ideas? I would think they are both related but may not be.

I would really call HBird customer service, they have always been good to work with. You can also try over on the Humminbird forum on bassboatcentral.com.

On console unit, take depth off of automatic and set for a little deeper than you normally fish. You should see the bottom contour OK. This is just a stop gap deal but will get you through until you get HB. Also, you may need a better or a new battery for your electronics. Just guesses here though. Good luck.

It does sound like a weaker battery which should be a 31 series in AGM style for BCB specs.

Thanks for the help. I was on the phone with Humminbird about two hours total today. No resolve. I will see about a new battery, but will probably send both units back to bird central.

Dr. Jag, did you also check the volts to the units. Corrosion on terminal switches at the master power and bow switches can lower the voltage below what the units need. You should be able to turn on the unit and find a screen that gives you how much power/volts it is receiving. Had this issue before on my 2006 Puma and cleaned a lot of terminal ends to get voltage back to 12V on the units. Volt meter will help track this down as well. Of course as BCB said a weak or small battery wil cause this. Some have run a wire directly from the battery as well to solve the low voltage. Just my experience on a similar issue.

The oat is reasonably new and thus we doubt corrosion to be the culprit. We are more focused on the cranking battery potentially being a 24 series smaller bulk sized, 1000 CCA required, minimums met battery. These boats just need more juice than some dealerships provide on standard battery costs, unless you spec or provide more battery.

What battery does BCB recommend? I am running a group 31 Sears Platinum cranking battery and two HDS 12 touch units that can consume some battery quickly if both are on and wide open doing all kinds of things that boggle the mind.Mine is about due for a refresh. Running a Merc ProXS on my rig. Whats your thought on which to use?

What year boat? Might want to run 12 gauge wire from battery as well. It increased my voltage from 11.4 to 12.2 at the front graph. Just a thought..
