Hyd Steering Cylinder

Okay guys, anyone have any issues with the teleflex steering cylinder wearing out and leaking? The cylinder on my 07 Puma is leaking and the bushings are worn which has caused about 1/2" play to the right and left. To my understanding I can have the replacement cylinder put on and they said I can expect to replace it about every 5 years, OR go with new heavy duty cylinder which i was told they make for Allisions, and it will last much, much longer. It comes down to $800.00 for one and $1000.00 for the other (parts and labor). It aint happening til after the holidays for sure....Anyone ever had to deal with this?

bassnreed,I had to replace the seals on my 08 puma this year as they were leaking. The leaking seals allowed air to get in to the system and that caused slack in the steering. The seal kit from a local dealer here in Canada cost about $180.00 I think.Mike

Had new seals on mine last year (09) and it was like 150. Big boat go fast stuff break.C.O.D. Jr. III

Id like to follow along on this. Dont have the leak but have a little play, maybe 1/4-1/3″ and was advised may need to replace unit if gets worse. I was told the new modified replacements held up better then the ones we got in our 2007 models. If thats not the case and this other one is better plus only cost an extra $200 for a better/stronger model, using it makes sense to me.

Thanks BCB, will share info with CR Marine. Would like to tighten the play up a bit and hope it helps me figure out the chin walk. Most of my chine walk control problem I know is to use a golf term “LOFT” (Lack of F—–g Talent)but Ill take every advantage I can get. Hope to be up to snuff again by May so I can get back on the water when the fishing is hot on south Champlain.

After speaking with Pete in BCB Parts, I have come to the conclusion that I will order the cylinder from BCB as the cost is $150.00 less than my local dealer, and pay the labor to have it installed which is only an hour. It boils down to the fact that I will be getting rid of this boat in less than 2 years, otherwise I would have gone with the beefier cylinder from Teleflex. Yea there is a seal kit but nothing really to take care of the worn bushings, and I dont want to use shims(band aid).Thanks BCB…
