Ignition Coil Problems & Advice

Heres another post about coil problems on Mercs and a word of advice: Take your motor to an authorized Mercury repair shop, even if the shop is miles away from your neighborhood shop. It could save you a lot of money and a lot of grief.Five weeks ago I took my Pantera Classic and Mercury 200 EFI to my usual guy (not an authorized Mercury repair shop) just a few miles away. I wasnt able to get up on plane and he diagnosed it as a bad ignition coil. Three weeks and $266 later (thats right, 3 weeks to get a simple part), I took it back out to the lake and it ran just as bad. A friend recommended an authorized shop so I took it to them even though it was much farther away. They ran a diognostics test and found that the #5 coil was bad. They contacted their Mercury tech who authorized replacement of the remaining five coils at no cost to me even though the motor has been out of warranty for nearly two years. I paid for the overnight shipping and picked up the boat one week from the day I took it in. Turns out my neighborhood guy never even discussed my coil problem with Mercury. He claimed Mercury dropped the ball in shipping the replacement coil and he had to get it from another dealer. I contacted Mercury and they claim to have no record of being contacted by him. So live & learn I guess!
