Ike on cranbaits BS!

I just got done reading an article by Ike on his new DT crankbaits. He goes into this whole finishes on cranks are attracting to the fisherman not the fish. His new line that is meant to "tone down" and a more "natural color" is exactly selling the fisherman! Ive always been taught to fish a crank as fast as the bait will allow. Ive also always thought that you pick a color that the forage in the lake has. I choose the amount of that color depending on clarity and depth. I understand that this is a buisness and these guys need to sell baits but give me a break. But then again this is the same idiot that was trying to sell you a crankbaits with a built in laser a few years back! Hell that makes more sense than a swimbait finish!

Some of the best crakbaits that I have ever owned have been ones that are faded and chewed to hell. I have a couple that I would go swimming for.

On our system we have an over abundance of baitfish (shad). If you use a shad colored crank you are competing with mother nature and literally billions or shad that look just like your crankbait. The colors that work good for us are standout colors that looks nothing like the forage base. I agree to match the hatch when there is a good predator/prey ratio but it does not work everywhere.I agree this is just another marketing tool but what do you want him to do?? The job of every salesman is to convince us we need their product. Dont take it personally.

Ikes “custom ink” series look good to me, almost as good as Strike King !Seriously, i know a guy that has caught more fish on the DT series cranks than i ever will on any crankbait. They work, and a toned down version may be just the ticket. I wish Iaconelli all the best with his custom line. D.

BASSCAT225,I have to agree with you on going swimming. I have a few US made plugs from the mid 80s that have moved operations out of the US. The quality is just not the same. I have one DB3 Magnum that is weighted that I wont fish unless there is money on the line.

Lest we not forget crankbaits are also designed to give off vibrations of a different sort than those of the abundant baitfish. Color helps, yes, but I have caught fish on clear or white no finish crankbaits and topwater baits as well. Everyone will have their confident bait n colors to throw. I like fire tiger in the early am light and lavender shad color later in the day on our lower Colorado River lakes. I know other guys utilize colors altogether different. I am not a fan of Ikes but I am sure he is doing what he is supposed to do besides catching fish in a tournament, make sales for his sponsors. Good Fishing!!!

I lean more toward Strike Zking but I ve caught tons of fish on DT series cranks. Dont slap the water with them them or any cracks. Ive lost a few going that. Remember cranks are reaction bite baits and that goes to the buyer too. Dont sweat the small things. I am a big fan of the DT 6 crankbait. I can tell you if your only fishing this bait ” as fast as the bait will allow” your cranking right past a lot of fish. Its a good pre spawn bait and I fish it when a lot of others are fishing rip baits. Try reeling it as slow as you can stand. The new colors look cool to me but I have not seen any in person yet. I like watching Ike! And Im always glad to see him in a Cat!

Come on now, they all sell their sponsors stuff. You dont think KVD actually fits in his seat, or Scott Martin actually uses Garmin with no imaging when money is on the line (watch last years FLW Cup, he was using Lowrance). Ike at least uses and likes what he is sponsored by (as far as I know), but the biggest difference between brand x for crankbaits vs brand a is usually color (action plays too but not the topic). So with that being said hes got to differentiate his sponsors stuff from the others, ie the new colors. In the end, color really doesnt matter, its presentation. I proved that to myself at Amistad. Especially with reaction baits. Just my 2 cents.- Chaz
