JACK PLATE SUGGESTIONS

I am new to this site and new to being a Bass Cat owner. I recently went from a Ranger 520 to a 2008 Cougar with a 250 Yamaha. I want to install a Atlas jackplate on the new to me cat. What set back will go good with this boat?I am also planning on mounting two 12 Talons on it as well. I know this is alot of weight and I am worried that it may be too much for the transom. I need some good advice before I start spening money.And by the way I am loving this new boat. I can see why so many people are Bass Cat owners for life. Look like I may be a convert.Thanks Reese

I can tell you that Toledo fiberglass on Toledo bend does a lot of work on transoms and they told me that bass cat transoms are about the toughest they deal with. He told me in all the years of fiberglass work he had worked one just one bass cat transom.

I had two talons and a 10 inch atlas on the ranger and it was a lot of added weight. I also had a transom failure with the Ranger that had to do with a previous accident to the boat. I believe that during the accident put a crack in the transom. Eventually the transom delaminated and I lost a 225 Yamaha, the talons, Atlas, and my transducers. Hence why I have a new to me boat now. Insurance covered it thank the Lord. I absolutely loved the set up I had on the Ranger. So I want to set up the Cat the same way on the back.Thanks for the advice. Toledo is my favorite place to fish

BCB doesnt like any plate larger than an 8″ plate. My 09 CougarFTD came with an 8″ plate. My 2006 CougarFTD came with a 6″ plate. Im not sure what year BCB went from 6″ to 8″.

Another question I have: once I put these add ons, do yall think that the low speed stability will be effected by the extra weight? I love the fact that this boat can stay on plane at very low speeds and not porpoise.

I dont think the added weight of changing from a manual plate to hydraulic plate will make much difference, if any. Ive heard mixed reviews on the topic as it pertains to Talons, and it seems that Power Poles dont create the problem nearly as often as the Talons, whether that is due to the increased weight, or the geometry of the brackets. I would suggest mounting them as high as possible until you have a chance to run the boat with them mounted. If it becomes a problem, another option may be to run a 4 blade prop to give you more stern lift. I know a guy with a 06-07 range Cougar w/ a 225, and he loves the bravo prop with that hull.

For boat warranty you should use the 8″ plate with 6 mounting holes that Bass Cat uses for more transom support.

I believe it was 2009 when Cat started using a 8″ plate. I think anything over 8″ voids hull warranty.

Do you think I will pick up any speed with a 8 inch? I do have a 6 inch on it now.

I wouldnt think you would gain much just from the set back, but being able to adjust the height on the jackplate will allow you to put it in the best position for holeshot then move it to the best height for speed. So it will give you best of both worlds without having to sacrifice speed for holeshot or holeshot for speed. Also really good for getting up in the shallow stuff. I really like my atlas no complaints or problems yet. I have the 8″ on my 2011.
