Just toss it in there and leave it. Make sure to use Lava. Most other soaps are too soft and will mush up. Lava will stay firm and when you get a backwash of water into the bilge it will slosh around and create just enough soap surfactant to keep most of the bilge clean.

Isnt that smart! I have an extra bar of Octagon which is hard like Lava Ill throw in mine.

It does work great. I learned that trick when I was running an assault boat in the military. One of my buddies started doing that to help out with getting his boat ready for inspections and it really worked well. We all followed his lead and it made the clean up for inspection so much easier. I dont always keep it in my bass boat but I do have experience with it and it does work very well. Guess since everyone has used it, its good. Went to buy some and saw on the package about the pumice ingredients, which gives it its cleaning/scrubbing power. Guess it wont hurt bilge pumps (the grittiness)? Checked their website and they only make the one product.
