Bought a new lower unit for the Tour model 109# MotorGuide and put it on last night. The hardest part was unscrewing the old one. One of the keys to doing this is to heat the shaft where it goes into the lower unit to soften up the Locktite that was used on the original assembly. I removed the motor from the bracket and layed it on the front deck. Wrapped the shaft with tape to keep from scratching it and then used a pipe wrench to hold it in place. Once I got it hot enough (used a heat gun set at 750 degrees) so you could smell the warm Locktite, the lower unit unscrewed really easy. Make sure you disconnect or cut the old wires first as they rotate as the lower unit is unscrewed. I also put a cord on the old wiring so as I pulled the old wiring out it was easy to attach to the new wiring to pull back in. My unit has the built in transduecer and I had to stagger the wires to pull them all the way back up. It is a tight fit to get all 4 wires through the top gear. When I was ready I put red Locktite on the threads on the shaft and in the threads on the lower unit. It acted as a lubricant and the lower unit screwed right bak on. Once I got it tight I heated the shaft for about 30 or 40 seconds to set the Locktite. I found the same connectors at the local Ace Hardware. A little cutting, stripping and crimping and I had it back together in about an hour. My old unit was a 2005 and had seen a lot of hours and was starting to growl so I think the bearings were going. When I tried the new one, it was whisper quiet. All in all it cost about $400 instead of replacing the whole unit for about $1,200. Hope the tips above help anyone attempting the same thing.John
