Lowrance downscan problem

I recently installed a second hds7 gen2 touch on the bow of my 2010 Sabre with the HDI downscan/2d transducer . My question is shouldnt the image quality from the hdi transducer be equivalent (image quality wise) to the downscan image from the lss2 transducer in the back ? The downscan image is very "grainy" and is not very detailed compared to the lss2 . Best image quality seems to be 455khz and negative contrast but still very grainy. Any thoughts ?

No, the down scan crystal is different from the 2D variation. Sorry, though we dont usually comment on LCR questions as the companies are a better resource. These comments are just opinions.

Thanks for the reply bcb but i know the downscan crystal is different from the 2d crystal , my concern in a nutshell is why does the hdi downscan image look so bad compared to the lss2 downscan image ?

Actually sounds like the HDI transducer might be bad. If the LSS2 transducer is working, the HDI is not. Call Lowrance Tech support at their 800 number, average wait time was 8 minutes last week so be prepared to wait.

I get equivalent quality downscan on my front and rear units with a similar set up. I would try swapping the console unit with the bow unit and see if the console looks bad with the HDI ducer. If so, Id try a different HDI ducer and see if it still looks bad. They really should be about the same. Could also be interference from your trolling motor.

Just a thought because I have seen this issue before. A fellow club member was having the same issue with his bird being a grainy picture on down imaging and he was getting interference from his trolling motor. He added some rubber between the ducer and the TM and problem solved. Side imaging a Di are very finicky when it comes to other electronics causing interference compared to 2D sonar.

Does the problem go away when youre not using the trolling motor? If it does this is a common problem with all units as far as I know and theres no real fix. One thing you can do is play with the power setting on your trolling motor and the interference will vary on mine based on what % the trolling motor is on. Thanks for the responses , I will swap heads and see if quality improves . The quality doesnt change when tm is actuated and have the hdi mounted on the lowrancd tm mount without anything between the xducer clamp and tm- i have some 1/16 thick rubber next if head swap doesnt pan out . I appreciate the ideas and will implement this week , tightlines !
