I have always replaced the oil after the first 20 hours. Then every 50 hours after that. I believe the manual states to inspect the oil every 50 hours for metal debris and replace every 100 hours or every year, which ever occurs first.

Take a look on Bass Boat Central and under the Mercury Pros XS section, Don has a list of “how tos” dealing with the 250 Pro XS motors under the Frequently Asked Questions section. It will tell you how to change the lower unit oil and how not to “OVERFILL” it. It was different than any other lower unit I have owned. I hope you love your motor as much as I did mine. I had a 2007 and a 2008 and they were really the best motors I have ever owned.Godspeed, Mark

How can you overfill? I have always filled until it came out of the top hole slightly.

As long as youre filling with the vent plug removed you cant overfill!

Once you put in the top plug, you are suppose to let appox. 1 oz. come back out of the bottom plug for expansion so you do not damage the seals from pressure build up. You may want to check on your year model, the 2007 & 2008 had these instructions. Don on the BBC board will be glad to chime in on this.Just trying to help, sorry for the confusion. Mark
