Mercury 250 Lower Unit Availability

I had a TM2 rebuilt with a new case and a bunch of internal parts replaced over the summer. It took a couple of weeks for parts but nothing extraordinary.

I would almost guanantee there is more damage than just the skeg. Have it pressure and vacuum tested as well as prop shaft runout.

Thanks, I’d be surprise see if the skeg is the only damage but we’ll see. I was only going about 35. No play at all when I tried to I’ve the prop but guessing there’s more damage. I was pretty close to the marina so just idled back.

Call Rob at AquaTech Marine in Palm Bay. He has my old Gen 2 TM lower. Propshaft is bent. Can’t remember condition of skeg but don’t remember it being broken off. Could be a cheap alternative.

you may check some mercury dealers who remove the standard lower that we use and replace them w/ another out drive. I don’t remember the correct name but that is how I found a brand new 1 years ago

Thanks for the advice, didn’t hear anything yet from the dealer today so not sure what the damage is or any time frame. Two weeks vacation about to start and all was planned around fishing. I’m over these east Texas lakes full of stumps and most are at lower levels. I want my deep Tennessee lakes!

The engine factories are all extremely backed up on production now and we don’t see any letup in the near future. We do anticipate parts availability falling behind due to the production needs.

This is going to be a lot more common.

One other option is to replace the housing. I think they are around 2k.

Hopefully I’ll hear something today as to whether or not there’s any damage besides the skeg.

I keep hearing about remanufactured vs. aftermarket lower units. Are the remans Mercury components, just rebuilt?

If there was no damage to prop or prop shaft is not bent then i doubt you did damage other than what skeg damage occurred. A new skeg can be welded on and one wont know the difference. Baugman in houston can do it.

I know this is not advised on some forums. Though being a machinist and welder i have welded my share through the yrs without failure.

We like to Z pattern our cuts to lock the skeg in place. Welding works fine in that case.

Well, got the bad news and quite a bit of damage so needs a new lower unit. Mercury back order is 4-6 weeks, aftermarket is available now.

In that case I’d wait for oem foot. Ive heards and seen the effects of after market. Most dont realize that the hardening of gears is crucial. More times than not aftermarket just barely meets par. I work at a place that has a lab where oils, metals, anti freeze, air filters and such are tested. Which is for customer satisfaction with proof!. Though some elect to go with aftermarket and that is their right. But with a 250 id wait for oem

4-6 weeks is ridiculous for a lower unit and unacceptable but guess there’s not much you can do about it. I’m not sure what to do, basically two months without the boat during some of the best fishing stinks. Son would miss most of the high school season for his senior year which I’d hate to see

The engine wait time is much longer at this time and the production capacity simply can not meet the demand. Aftermarket parts have not had the same durability, from learned affiliation with consumers who have tried them. They seem to have improved however.
