Mercury Switch on 250 Pro XS

Hoping BCB or someone else can answer this question. Had some pre season work done to my 2007 Merc 250 Pro XS. With the cowling off we noticed what looks like a mercury switch (no pun intended) bolted to the starboard side of the engine. Its wired to the trim circuit and when in the right position stops the up trim from working. I have a Detweiler Jackplate and I know BCB has mentioned if you over trim you will hit the steering rams on the top of the plate. My guess is this switch is supposed to prevent that from happening. However, the switch is loose. Ive never hit the plate but Im also aware that it can happen so I dont over trim. Should I tighten this mercury switch and was this a BCB add on in 2007? The dealer was impressed but couldnt find the part listed by Mercury, BCB or Detweiler. Anyone know if this was just a BCB idea? Alan

Alan, Mercury factory installed and today its a option thats offered as dealer installed.. Your right. Its to limit tilt up to keep from damaging the cowl, steering or even the boat from tilting motor full up.

The one on your engine is probably a gray or black epoxy appearing piece with two wires coming from it. That is a BCB manufactured part which was a stock item in some installs, to stop the trim, just as you mention. These should be tensioned only and not tightened too much to prevent them from moving. Your trim will start bump stopping once the trim range peak is neared.

Thanks for the replies. This switch is the epoxy looking piece that BCB says. My switch is very loose and rotates easily around the bolt. Now my question is should I find the best position for it and tighten it just enough so it doesnt move easily? I worry that in rough water it would move and prevent me from trimming the motor. Thanks again for the help.

It wont prevent movement in rough water and you do find the closest point to the bump stopping where it shuts down before contact.
