Mid to later 2000’s Compartment Lights

The mid to later 2000 series with compartment lights may have a ground wire that could loosen. The mercury switch used to turn those on is located in a small aluminum housing. That housing is welded on and there is a possibility that over time the wire soldered into the mercury switch could come loose, or the connection become compromised. This requires replacement of the mercury switch, which is able to be dug out and reinserted with a little effort. Or you can replace the mercury switch with an arm or button style switch. Some appliance switches would work for the arm style. The issue on the ground are that the wire is singular on the mercury switch, and we use a ground through the hinges to activate the compartment lights. This ground fastens to the machine screws used for mounting. In time the connection wears and the ground not make contact. Then the lights in the box and alarm segments will not work. Usually you can simple reset the screws, adjust the tension and reset the contact on the wire fitting that has a #10 nut (3/8" head) holding it in place. In either of these cases a voltmeter can be used to track these issues. BCB
