motor setup cougar w/250 pro xs

i am trying to set up my 09 cougar..26 fury/250 merc/manual jackplate.........from factory the 2 parts of plate were flush..i have raised it as much as 1" and handles better but lost little speed..turning @6000 in this 90 degree water and gps @75 pretty loaded..read on here about 80mph quite often and wondering how to set up..when measuring from bottom centerline of boat do you measure from lowest point or bottom of groove that is in center of hull...seems about 3 1/2 inches from lowest point now..any suggestions??

Try 3 1/4 to 3 1/2″ below pad… should be 1/4″ to 1/2″ up from flush on the plate. To be sure, trim the motor level to the ground and measure from ground to prop shaft…then ground to pad below drain plug and subtract the difference. Should see some good numbers and performance in that area with the Fury.

Fury props like lower engine heights. Lower the engine until you start losing speed and then come up 1/4″. Dont worry about what others are running or where their heights are! From the factory, those engines are set pretty close to where they will perform best. In addition, depending on what you calling “pretty loaded” may have a lot to do with not running 80. Though in normal load conditions you should be able to run high 70s anyway.

LOWER THAT ENGINE! The engine is too high to retain bite in wakes and rough water. Go back down and eliminate the steering torque. The reason you are able to drive it is slippage which creates torque, which robbed your speed, fuel mileage and could be potentially hazardous to drive. BCB

thanks very much for the quick replies..I will gladly take your advice…Clint..glad you got a cat, you talked to me about my 06 ranger z20..I sold it and now have the best boat I have ever owned..I love to drive it so much I run around too much instead of fishing!! thanks again..Johnny Douglas
