Oil Leak? Need Input From The Merc Opti Guys

Hey fellas, Just took delivery of my new 2018 Caracal that has a 225 Pro XS Optimax on it and I noticed I had some 2-stroke oil leaking out of what looks like is a weep hole at the port side upper location of the torque master lower unit. The motor has only 15 minutes on it and the boat has never seen the water yet. I asked my dealer about this and he said not to worry and this is normal because Mercs really pump out a lot of extra oil during the break in period. It’s not that I don’t trust what the dealer is saying, and I have tried to contact Merc direct through their website (no response back yet after a few days), I just want piece of mind that my brand new investment (which is in storage until spring because of the awesome Michigan winters) is ‘OK’ or if this is something that I should be thoroughly concerned about. The weep hole is there to as a “indicator”. Any other time i would say to pull the lower unit and check the lower crank seal(if it brown oil which would be dfi oil). Or upper seals on the lower unit(bluish green high performance gear oil). In your case though most likely is caused from “spillage”during the prime of the engine mounted oil tank. Though i would thoroughly keep a watchful eye on it. I would pull the cowl and just give a look around the engine mounted tank for piece of mind. This is a 2 stroke im assuming? You done the correct option though by informing the dealer.

Greg It’s Ok new motor with only 15 min run time it’s excess DFI oil from the dealer doing the oil pump prime and being in break in mode using double to oil for the first 2 hours that is controlled by the PCM. The excess oil is running down the exhaust and out the drain hole for the shift shaft. If they winterized it also that would be even more oil draining down thru the exhaust…

Thanks Sherm and Red! I appreciate the help. I’ve never had a brand new engine and just wanted a little piece of mind. I’ll be sure to continue to monitor this.
