smbass..where are you?
Hes gonna tell you to lock through and fish towards Nashville……..lol Id go up in the river pending your style of fishing , up past Bartons Creek – Spring Creek thats if your a power fisherman , Then there is the lower end from Avondale boat ramp in the bend of the River towards the dam if you like to fish deep . If your looking for Ky Lake type of water your going to have to fish from Old Hickory Boat Dock to the dam its the widest part of the lake and has just about everything you might need if you like Ky Lake but in a smaller area without the huge numbers of fish . The upper end from Bartons Creek to the Cordell Hull dam narrows up / down kind of like Saline Creek on Lake Barkley to Yellow Creek towards Clarksville . As far as baits at OH Lake next month , dont think you can pattern that lake at all on a 2-3 day derby it changes everyday , one day your catching them in a 6 inches the next day you will sitting in 16-20ft casting to 5-8 ft . The milfoil is gone and has been the last 8-10 yrs . Good Luck , OH Lake used to be one of my ol playgrounds . What fish-off you have coming down to OH Lake ? LURES OF MY CHOICE IF I HAD TO GO TO OH LAKE IN SEPTEMBER ! Square billFlipping jigsFootball headsspinner baitsbuzz baitsand possibly 6XDS and just maybe , maybe a 10XD on a few of my old spots down around the dam if not silted in by now and if all else fails – chartreuse-n-pink dynamite fished shallow to deep water with very long cast …………..lolHAVE FUN WITH THAT GAR HOLE NEXT MONTH !Last edited by Deep Structure on August 8th, 2013, 12:14 pm, edited 1 time in total.
Yep,What Deep Structure said. Old Hickory is the ultimate “junk fishing” lake. Youll find that youll probably have 10-12 rods laying on your deck all with different lures tied on. Youll catch fish in ankle deep water all the way out to the river ledge. But, their rarely is a dependable pattern so that you can locate fish with any consistency. This is especially true from day to day as the fish location usually changes. If you can get out early enough, you might find a frog bite around water willows VERY early in the morning. Throw the “book” out the window when fishing Old Hickory. Fish are likely to be just about anywhere. The best advice I could give you would be to take your style of fishing and match it with the water Deep Structure described above, and put your head down and go fishing! One other suggestion, check on the PAA website. They had a tournament last year about that same time. I think Steve Kennedy won it with his “magic” swimbaits up in the river. Gary Yamamoto finished second fishing senkos around boat docks. Gary made the statement at weighin that there was no reason for the fish to be where he caught them………but they were there and he managed a good bag on the last day of the tournament to place second. This pretty well sums up what I was trying to describe to you above. Good luck……..if I can help, send me a message.Mike
Mid Sept I be fishing the mid lake area humps were they drop into the main channel I havent been this year to see if the grass came up on the humps but I doubt it. Lived on that lake for 12 years…..I take that back my son and I were out there once this spring. Everyone says its been tough the past couple of years and indeed it was tough that day. You need to find some of those humps with structure on them. Up the river where Deep is talking about there is some great spots. They are not hard to find on a weekend. Look for a bass boat, there is most likely some type of structure under the water if its not right there where you can see it. Dont be afraid to fish behind someone. take plenty of jigs if fishing that pattern. We dont call it old stickory for nothing. Smaller baits can yield more limits of fish on that lake IE baby brush hogs, 1/4 ounce jig, small black buzzbait over a flat, etc….
Thanks for all the info, a big thanks. I have fished there twice two years ago and it was junk fishing for me. I can relate to your comments about fish here one day and poof they are gone the next. I plan on burning some gas before the derby and finding enough places that I have some confidence in. It would be great to find a school on the river, catch a limit then go root around the shallows up river for some kickers. My style,,well I fish as far South as Dover on Barkley to Barkley dam and through the canal down to New Johnsonville on KY. Maybe thats why Im not as dialed in as I should have been this year,,haha.Anyway thank you guys again. Im headed down for a little pre-fish the 17th, maybe I will have something worth reporting!Brad
Hooked up and headed out for a 2 day tangle with Old Hick. 8 rods on deck, leaving my paper map at home and going with my gut. I hope to have a good report and thanks to all you guys who sent me PMs. If your on the water and see me come on by.
Let me know how OH goes. Hope to be there for the BWS Natl Championship lin a cpl months.
The fishing was awesome. I had 18+ lbs Monday and had around 14 today. I figure I caught 75-85 fish over two days and 20 or so was 3 pounders. I would like to go into further detail but I will keep this to myself at least till my tournament has come and gone. I will say that I thought I was on my home lake the way I was catching em!! The Gar hole is FULL of bass,,just gotta find em.Last edited by Brad Kell on August 29th, 2013, 12:44 am, edited 1 time in total.
