On board charger

Thank you smbass. I noticed that the PS12 is 1 1/1″ longer than the PS8. There is currently about that far between the chargers to make room for the wires. Did you install the PS12 with the wires coming out over the bilge area? Or was you originally installed with more room between the two chargers? My PS8 didnt die after any particular event. It is the original one that came with the boat back in 06. I have only wiped out the bilge area twice and keep a bar of LAVA loose down in the area. The LAVA does a good job of keeping things clean and keeping the pumps clear. -Judge Mc

When one of my on-board chargers failed Mr Rick suggested a Lester charger like are used on golf carts. It is not built in but carried in my truck or left on the dock. It has been very reliable. You might check it out on this board including what Kevin Short says about it in the video walk around of his boat.

Whatever brand you put in give yourself some time to do the job right.You may run into some mounting issues. The old Lester on-boards had different shape then the horizontal style chargers.If the boat does not sit in a boat lift/ slip a lot of guys are going with the separate heavy duty chargers.Reduces weight. The on board chargers generate heat even when in ‘idle’ mode.

Is there a down side to using a three bank charger other than the cost of only replacing the two bank? It seems it would take up less room and only have one AC cord to plug in. The Bass Pro shop XPS charger is on sale.
