Optima or BPS AGM?

Since Im upgrading to LEDs on the deck and in all compartments I want to beef up my starting battery and happen to have quite a few BPS gift cards. Which is the better buy, a big Optima or one of their AGMs?

Awhile back I purchased a optima. Actually got a friend that had some connections (GOT REALLY GOOD DEAL). So I thought why not!. Alot on this board like the optima. Many folks have different opinion on different batteries. As for me I have not been real impressed with the optima. I like the wet cell for the troller. The blue tops have worked well for me for trolling motoring, but not near as well as a starting battery. Not enough juice.

The argument against the Optima is that their spiral cell technology, making them smaller and lighter, also limits their reserve capacity when compared to others. Like everything else, some like them and some do not. Personally, I think there are better choices in AGMs available. As far as the other AGM from Bass Pro, I know that some of their batteries are rebadged Deka batteries, a good quality battery.

I will add this may not make a hill of beans. Though since I have quit using my on board charger and started using a manual charger for the cranker my power is a little better. good stuff guys! thanks. I had a blue top optima in my old boat and liked it compared to a standard deep cycle…. never really had any experience with the AGM so wasnt sure what to think.

Go heavy AGM 31 Series. BCB has not endorsed spiral cell AGM technology.

I havnt looked at the BassPro AGMs, however East Penn (DEKA) is the manufacturer of BassPro shops flooded batteries and I would assume the AGM s also. If so, it is a good battery. Same battery that Sams is now stocking under the Duracell label. The best way to tell is to look at one of the Sams batteries, or a DEKA, then look at the BassPro battery. Sears Gold Diehard as well- I had a platinum Pm-1 but it had quit charging to 12.7 volts- it would only go to 12.3, anyhow I run an LCX28HD- HB899SI and an older LMS337 up front- And so far havent killed the Gold AGM31- this spring I will give it a good test of all 3 running plus the livewell and see if it holds up- the first indicator your battery is failing or not big enough is the graphs not staying on when you start your engine-Last edited by scubaman154 on January 11th, 2017, 2:08 pm, edited 1 time in total.
