Overfilled Battery

I was doing some maintenance, getting my boat ready for the spring. Unfortunately, I overfilled one of my batteries. I was at a bad angle and the water came out faster than anticipated, thus the overfill. Should I take something like a turkey baster and suck an ounce or two out? I put the battery cap back over the cells, and when charging I could see a little water bubbling out around the edge of the cap. Any input would be most appreciated.

You should keep the level down below the vent slots in the battery ports neck. Otherwise it will excessively gas and boil out causing a mess always, both under usage and charging.

A little tip for anyone who isnt aware that the use of any tap water will boil and ruin batteries; distilled water will not. I have had bass boats for over 40 yrs and just found this fact on a TV show a few yrs ago. Batteries last a lot longer and never boil when charging unless dirt or any foreign matter gets in open cell.

Always use distiller water on batteries.

Baking soda is what you should use to sprinkle and cleanse tops and battery areas, it neutralizes the acids.

A hydrometer, available at any auto parts store, is a handy tool to have. You can check the state of charge, and safley add or remove fluid from the battery (Im a battery acid wimp). Theres a formula someplace in cyber-space thats will calaulate the hours needed to charge a battery with a “dumb charger and a hydrometer.
