Speed seems a bit high with a stock 150. I have a 97 Sabre with a slightly modified Merc 150 and the speed you mentioned is what my boat will do. Im turning one pitch higher at the recommended rpms. I also have a chopper if I want more speed but the holeshot is brutal.

They could run 70 new, though in time everything loses in all areas and they fall off. We think most run 60 plus with adequate setups.

Safe speed is however fast you can drive it !! — 70 seems a bit much for a 150 . — Check motor numbers to see if your 150 might be a 200 in 150 covers . – You also didnt mention if that speed is a G.P.S. , or speedometer reading . — Low 70s on the speedometer would be closer to mid 60s actually . ( About 7% off usually )

Speed is probably a speedo speed. My classic with a 200 will run 75 every day of the year, and with the right water conditions and cold air will run past 78. It will peg the speedo. 🙂

Heaviest accessory on a boat is a GPS. One of those suckers will knock 5-7mph off the speed of any rig. If it wasn’t necessary for chart position or waypoints, they should never put one on a boat. Broken more men’s hearts than divorce attorneys.

Same was true for coffee shop racing and the older BP dashes in the 1993 through 1996 era. They were extremely accurate and most never got side up to see whos was faster. Though tackle shop racing brought many a consumer to call us on a Monday afternoon wondering why Johns boat with a 200 is running 85 and theirs only runs 72-74? Our first question was did they outrun you? “No though his boat is running 78 and mine is only running 72!” Which leads to conversation about RPM, and propeller pitch and then telling them Johns boat is simply not that fast. Of course they always trusted John because he was their buddy. Eventually though Saturday mornings tell the truth. We still saw this one is lucky to get 60s in todays world. In those older days they would run loaded up to 64-65 with a good setup loaded.
