Please Help with questions regarding a local BassCat!!!

Hey Guys,I dont remember if Ive posted before but Im always on the lookout for local BassCats. Ive found one through a source (in Northern California) but I have some questions as to what its worth. First off, its a 2000 Sabre single console. Ive talked to the guy whos selling it and from what he says, the hull, vinyl, carpet, and gel coat are in good condition with no tears, exposure to sun (been covered outdoors under a canopy), and no stress fractures or previous repairs to the fiberglass. He even said the trailer was in good condition (even the trailer fiberglass fenders). The only problem is that its powered by an early-90s Johnson 150hp oil-injected carbureted 2-stroke. It originally had a 150 Merc XR6 that blew up and he just replaced it with this motor he found on CL for probably a grand or so. Hes asking $6K. My question is if its worth that and if I do buy it, is it worth repowering with a newer used optimax. Id really appreciate any input! Thanks, Ryan.

I know your question is about value. So I will share my thoughts on it first. I would say if the boat was rigged with a 150 merc xr6, it is about a $7,500 boat in good shape as described. That Merc is about 3k so the boat is worth about 4500. The Johnson is worth $1,000 at most in my opinion. I would say $5500 is a fair value. It has to have a good trolling motor.I buy, fix up, and sell also. It is a hobby, but I enjoy it. I completely rig the boats myself and I am very detailed oriented with 25 years of tournament fishing. I have some rules of thumb for buying. One of those rules of thumb – absolutely no Johnsons or old evinrudes. Boats with them are very difficult to sale. Even if it is a good deal, I stay away from them because there is not usually enough money to derig, rerig, and buy a merc.Now I do own a 1998 Aluminum Basscat A-18 and it has a 98 Johnson 90hp – the crossfire version. It is a very reliable motor. But it will hurt me when I sale it. Just a fact.Hope that helps!

This is a really nice looking Classic with a 200 Merc EFI on it in Northern California, also on Craigslist, for what seems to be a good price.. Thanks for the input guys, I really appreciate it. As for value, yes, thats my main concern. My goal is not necessarily to “flip” it per se, but I dont want to lose my ass on it if I ever need to sell it. It really looks like a nice rig, Im just really scared about that old Evinrude. I wish it were easy to find a good used XR6 or even a Mariner, haha. And about that Classic for $11,500, I agree it looks like a good deal. However, its a little out of my price range. I might give him a call and see how firm he is though. Anyways, thanks again for the input guys, much appreciated. This is a great forum!
