Pro XS oil

Forgive all the “newbie” questions, but just got my first Cat, and have never owned a black motor…I just came across Mercs spec for my 07 225 Pro XS and it says to use premium plus. I was told to use the Opti/DFI oil. Just bought some but luckily, havent added any yet. Which am I supposed to use?Thx

Premium Plus. For Opti its the DFI becuase it burns less cleanly and needs a little more detergent.

Is the Opti/DFI okay to use? Or should I exchange it for Prem Plus? Im guessing the Opti oil is a better quality? DH

I did the opposite — I ran my opti using premium plus. From what I heard it wont make much of a difference with one tank but over time it wouldnt be smart.ON the other hand, the premium plus is cheaper so youd be better exchanging it.

I have run both the XS and Pro XS motors, and I was told specifically and directly by my dealer and a Mercury Tech in Fond Du Lac (called specifically to ask), that you should run Premium Plus, and only Premium Plus in the X series engines.It is what they were designed to run–both the 225 and 250 versions.Im sure the DFI would do in a pinch, but why run more expensive oil, and be running something that Merc does not recommend?Mike Whitten/Germantown, TN

I have a 05 250 xs and have run nothing but opti oil since day one. I also run quickleen in every tank of gas. motor has 160 hours hard running time and no problems. You pay more for opti oil ,but thats ok. NO prem plus gonna run in this motor. PEDDLE TO THE FLOOR

I do not even run Mercury OIL and am running a pure synthetic of another brand in my 225 Pro XS. Have 125 hours on it, no problems at all and run a little over 75 turning a 27 pitch trophy prop 5600 rpms. I also run a synthtic of the same brand in my lower unit. This stuff cost less money than premium oil that mercury puts out and have it delivered to my door. Good Luck

Blinky,I believe that your 250 XS is a different animal than the 250 Pro XS. It is a motor out of the racing division designed to run the Opti Oil. The Pro XS is a production motor designed as MW stated to run the premium plus. Im on my 3rd Pro XS and have alway run the Premium Plus without any problems.

The recommendation for the Racing Division Optis are also Premium Plus.

I will repeat this, just to be sure there is no misunderstanding, and to AMEN what Phil and Scott posted behind me.The Mercury XS engines, the 250 XS racing motor, and the 250 and 225 Pro XS engines, all are designed to be run on the Mercury Premium Plus Oil. Mercury DOES NOT recommend the DFI oil for these engines. As I said in my first post, I want told, point blank, NOT to run DFI oil in these engines. This was from a tech rep at Fond Du Lac.Out of warranty, run what you want. In warranty, Im running the oil that Merc recommends. One more thing in my favor if I ever do need a warranty claim.Mike Whitten
