problem with tachometer

I have a 2005 Classic with a 200 EFI merc. Recently the tachometer seems to be doubling the RPMs. It idles at 1500-1600 and easily goes to 8,000 when running. It seems to run ok, just the RPMs are off. Any ideas on what is wrong?

Probably a bad tach, My 2006 Sabre I just bought is doing the same thing. I guess we need to price one from BCB.

It could be a few items, a tach is most likely. Those are Mercury parts in the standard gauges and they are under engine warranty. If you have Smart Craft or other smart gauges, then it is definitely something else. BCB

Must be that time of the year, My 2007 Sabre (150 opti) started the same thing last week, tach reads appoximately double actual. Only does it at times no rime or reason when, engine never changes sound or RPM only tach reading. I hope when Skip connects to DDT he does not say “Man you have been turning this engine 8 Grand.
