problems with oil sensor??

i have a 97 basscat with a 2003 225 mercury optimax on it, its worked fine up until this jan or feb, the oil sensors started going off, put it in two different shops, the last one just called me and said they had been on the phone with mercury techs and couldnt figure out whats causing it other than the dash is bad? the motors getting oil and running fine , but the idiot lights on the dash and the mercury smart guage is flashing and the oil buzzer is going off, any suggestions on how to fix it, both the dealers are mercury dealers but not bass cat dealers. any help would be appreciated. thanks.

BOTH are wrong, the dash only reads the sending unit from the engine. Power drive the oil sensor on the dash and that power is only supplied form the engine. It either does not have a feed, or is sensing one.

You should also have a horn or beeper going off also.

This is apparently an repower and we suspect there is no horn on the ignition switch?

If you turn your key on you should hear an audible horn warning tone beep – beep – beep?

If not, then your horn is not conencted from the rengine to your beeper?

If so then the other issue, is that the power supply to the dash has been disconnected becasue someone didn’t know where or how to wire it.

Had this problem on my last cat 98 200 opti no one could find the problem, motor would run fine. Finely a mechanic found the problem by accident ,it was the wires to the sensor would touch and cause the horn to go off. he spread the wires and made sure they could not touch. Sold the boat in 05 and never had the horn problem again. No problems so far on with the 05 Cat. May be this will help. Good luck

yes the beeper was going off, but quit. i ran it low of oil back in jan and filled it back up and it quit beeping then a month later i fished again and it started but quit beeping but the idiot lights still flash low oil, the last dealer just replaced the beeper but that didnt fix it he said it was going off again, so you think maybe a loose wire or something in the dash? of from the motor? Wheres the closest dealer to cullman, alabama? thanks.

Airport Marine has been through Tech School and Gary or Skip both are Grade V (5) technicians, which is our highest. They either one could fix this up in an hour or so.

The dealership in Florence, Performance Plus Marine, is a good one, though the wrench is not BP dash certified. Though could find it on his own with perhaps a little more time invested.

You have to get it to someone who understands that something is causing the issue and not a faulty component.
