Topic: prop selection for a 1976 basscat

I have a 1976 Basscat XX11 Trihull with a 1990 115hp johnson with a 13 X 19P prop on it and a 6" set back jackplate! When on plane and full throttle it will only do 36.5 mph GPS speed! Is that about right for this model! I thought it might get 45 Mph on plane! The Prop shaft is about 2" below the bottom of the boat! And it does have a whale tail on it! Any advice would be apreciated!"

That rig was quite capable of low 50s on a 1976 model. Most would run from 47 to 54 MPH. There are not going to be any of todays propellers that would be run on this rig as a comparison. Back then we used an SST in 19 or 21 sizes. The SST required extra cup for more bow lift also. The standard ones would not work well. If you can find a Raker in the newer styles we suggest you try one. BCB

With that answered now about the porpising! When on plane it had a very small window in trim before it would porpise bad! I thought the whaletail would stop that! Were should the propshaft be in reference to the bottom of the boat? Even or slightly lower or slightly higher!

You will have to have more cup in the propeller to prevent porpoising on this hull. The entire issue you presently face is related to propeller. If you can not get a propeller to perform where you want, then a planing tab could be applied to the hull. Many had these applied back then. Some were rather crude, and others were finished. BCB
