prop shaft grease

How necessary is it to use the Mercury gease on the shaft when installing a new propI have a new one Im wanting to put on but just have a tub of general purpose grease Will this work for a while until I can get some og the correct stuff ordered?And does it have to the Mercury brand or are there alternate kinds that are easier to find?

Any kind of grease will suffice. The grease will only help to keep the prop hub/prop from seizing on the shaft in harsh conditions such as saltwater.

Anti-seize works better, but messy.
