Great!BCB
A Mercury Tempest will be a good choice. I have also heard a lot of good things about the PowerTech VMX prop.Good luck and sorry to hear about your Trophy.Judd Lasiter
I have a 27 tempest brand new with hub kit 450 .00870 467 5299
A P4 will run just about anything you put on it. I run a 26 tempest which performed better than a 26 raker(old style raker). My target of “maximum performance” is top end- period. If your target is nice mid range lift, easy to drive, and can give 1-2 mph on top end then a trophy is your prop which I believe is the predominate prop on the boat. I have seen everything from a 24-27 in tempest and trophy listed as ideal prop for that boat. Everyones load is different- driver weight, second console, typical fuel load, altitude of operation, coangler, tackle, extra trolling motor, stuff in front versus rear, saddle tanks, etc. If I were gonna start it would be a 25 fury though. That prop is nasty and you can put your boat on the cab of your truck with all of that low end torque. In the summer with 2 anglers, 2 consoles, full tanks- 67 mph for meWinter with me only light gas- 72+ easy.C.O.D. Thanks Ward, running a 25 trophy now around 5700rpm with 1 person would like to get a few more rpms with two aboard.
Ward- How is the hole shot with the 26 Tempest? Fixing to get a P4 and that is what is on it. I just sold my Classic and top end was great but the hole shot left a little to be desired but it was a 25 Trophy. Thanks
I ran a 26p Trophy on my P4 and loved it. 55-5600rs, good lift, and midrange was incredible. Although i did have a bit of work done on the prop ! But the P4 will eat anything you try, and my suggestion would also be a 25p Fury, and remember, the P4 likes the engine low on the transom for most “regular” applications. D.
I have been running a 26 trophy, fastest speed has been 72.9 generally during the fall and winter. Summer time generally around 68. I am usually turning right at the rev limiter during tournammet days and have played with the height of the engine quite a bit but still hit the limiter from time to time which i believe is 5850 on the rpms. I would like to try the fury but have been waiting for numbers from someone who has tried it on the P4, specifically a 26P fury.
I am running 25 trophy and have seen 69gps full livewells and 1/2 tank of gas that was in the summer. Same load and during the summer with 2 guys 67. I would like to try a tempest or fury one of these days. There was a discussion just the other day about this also. http://basscatowners.yuku.com/topic/6811
Hole shot is never bad with the 26 tempest I have but- The reputation of the 26 tempest is that there is quite a bit of variance in the true pitch of the prop from Merc and as mine has not been blueprinted- it may be a 25 it may be a 27 or a 26 which always makes these comparisons tough. the boat youre gettin with a 26 will run great.C.O.D. Hole shot will always go to the smaller wheel, and top end to the larger if it will get up.
The reason I asked is my fishing partner has the 23 Trophy Plus on a new (broke in) 135 Mercury; the boat is sluggish coming out but once out, the boat with the two of us and all the gear and water in the live wells, has hit 60 mph on good water ( his speedometer reading not GPS). He wondered if the 21 Trophy Plus would make a substantial improvement in the hole shot, and how much difference it could make speed wise.I read this forum; between the bass boaters and BCB staff, I wanted to see if someone might have a specific idea about the hole shot and speed issues without having to locate a 21 and putting it on. Perhaps the below information will help. He has it behind a 17 ft. Triton. He had a older Mercury 115, but could get insurance coverage on the motor/boat 135 combination so he went up to the 135 on the boat. Hes boated a lot of years and knows he cant mess around with the combination.
Does your current prop have vent plugs? If so try removing one at a time and try it. My experience with props is you will loose about 2-3 MPH with one size smaller prop and gain rpms…IE 23p to a 21p. You should gain just about 200rpm with the smaller prop. What is his rpm @ wot. It should be around 5700. You dont want to go too small and over rev the engine.Last edited by Mainecat on August 25th, 2010, 3:18 am, edited 1 time in total.
You might be better off putting this in the “Props” section:http://basscatowners.yuku.com/forums/65/BCB Admin
