Puma Rear Compartment – Adding Drain Holes?

One of the rear deck compartments on my 2007 Puma got water in it when it was uncovered, the lid was not latched and it rained. When the rain stopped, there was ~1.5 inches of water in the compartment. Since there is no drain inside the compartment, I used a siphon hose to remove most of the water, then a sponge to sop up most of the rest. Since then (3 days now), Ive been trying to dry the carpet inside the box by having a fan blow into the open compartment. That is slowly working but looks like another couple of days will be required in order to dry it. Out of curiosity, why are there no drain holes in the corner of the compartment? Will there be any problems if I add them? C.

As long as you drill directly to the rear, there should be no problem if you desire to do this. It must be drilled horizontal 90 degrees towards the rear. The reason we do not suggest it is that the rear sump is a wet area and moisture is allowed to travel through the holes when the boxes are dry. We do understand your logic, and we try to build them dry when they are new. Though the latches can leak, and folks do make mistakes like yours not being latched. We try to handle it on an overall basis. BCB

As BCB states…………………the bilge is a wet area and will allow moisture back through the hole that you make. Fix the problem which is making sure the lid is closed and latched tightly. Also another potential problem can be the corner drain pipe.
