Questions on a 1991 pantera 2

could be a number of things. First I would try a different prop. I have a 93 PII 200 hp and run a trophy 23 P 4 blade. Sometimes I use a 21p for a better hole shot. Could be the motor is not at the right height. And last dont take his word on the compression, go get it done yourself. Im still thinking its the prop.

thank you for the reply I have a 23 off a 87 150 Im going to try today to see if it helps. what way would you go with the jack plate? He has been going down with it. I love the boat its like new with tons of storage and what a smooth ride. I clocked it with gps at 75 even fastest Ive ever been on the water.

Raising motor vertically will improve hole-shot and take away a little top-end.

Im no expert but I would say a normal set up is when the cavitation plate is about half to three quarters of an inch above the bottom of the boat.

I could see this being a number of things but I doubt is it the prop. I had a 1990 Pantera II with a Mariner Mag 2 150 and ran a Predator 24 pitch 3 blade on it and it ran great. I would not think a 24 pitch prop would be too much but it depends on how large the diameter of the prop is and if the prop is bent. If the boat planed out faster on the first time then the second then it is doubtful it is the prop. Is the motor an XR4? If it is then it is running a small hub lower unit unless it has been changed. The 1987 150 you had would have been running the large hub lower unit so there is a good possibility that your 23 pitch prop will not fit on the motor. Being a 1991 model motor means it is most likely a carbureted motor. The carburetors could be out of timing or could need to be cleaned in order to work properly. What seems to be more likely is the gas line collapsing when you put a load on the motor or water intrusion on the hull. If the gas line has not been replaced you could have the inner liner of the gas line collapsing when you put a high demand on the motor and that could be starving the motor of fuel. The other thought is water intrusion on the hull. You said you fished for about an hour. That would have given the boat time to take on water and you have not been aware of it. I doubt this is happening but it is possible. I think you should take the boat to someone and have a compression check done for sure, 96 lbs on the cylinders seems a little low to me. Mike

good information you gave him NacCatThis is a twenty year old boat. Be sure to get under the boat and look for any breaks in the fiberglass….possible water intrusion. Look at the transom area for water stains around the motor mount bolts that weep water.I too believe BCB built and builds a great boat but it is a boat and subject to the previous owners care and handling of mantainence.Have it checked out by a competent marine mehcanic and boatsman …then you have some peace of mindBob

Clocked it at 75 with a gps. Sorry but something is fishy here. If you have a 20 year old 150 hp motor hitting 75 mpg (gps) you better snatch it up quick!

I just checked the app that I used to clock the boat and you are right it is off 20 miles an hour. I went over and ran a compression test on it and it has 96 pounds of compression per cylinder. the prop is 24 by 48 the motor is a rx6 150. Naccat your right on the prop way to big. Thanks everyone for the advice as much as I like the boat Im thinking Im going to pass on this boat. dont want to spend the money only to have to spend more on a rebuild next year.Last edited by Snycat on June 21st, 2011, 1:37 am, edited 2 times in total.

Does anyone have a manual That says what the compression is sposed to be on these motors. Because I talk to a machine shop that rebuilds outboard motors and they say that the compression is fine. Im having a hard time walking away from the boat .
