There is no ground plane as with a vehicle. Water produces a very poor plane for the signal to carry. There is a very limited signal on the water and also these are often lakes in remote locations, far from large radio markets. Thus the rising popularity of satelite radio in marine and next will be IPOD & MP3 jacks.
The antena is not in the way and is best mid ship and exposed.
The remote is well sealed, and we have had very few issues with any of the remotes since the 80’s when we went to remotes on the better systems.
Age is the only problem we have seen on older remotes that have seen lots of sun and storage outside.
