How do I replace the tow strap on my trailer. I have a 2012 Cougar and the strap needs replacing. The winch is covered by the step that is welded onto the winch. I can’t see how to get at the old strap mounting pin to replace it.
Thinking there’s four bolts bolted through the bottom mounting plate that you can remove in order to take the winch itself off and then replace the strap. That’s how it is on my Puma with the step.
Could be way off but thought I’d try to help you look at it a different way.
I remember replacing the strap on my Classic but it was a lot of years ago. And it’s when I found the Bass Cat build slip (a very dirty one as it had been tucked in there 4-5 years) tucked up under the step over of the winch! Anyway, I remember removing just the one bolt ( I do remember it wasn’t easy) that beginning of strap is attached to. I don’t recall how it was attached exactly but I think there is a sheath the bolt goes through and strap attaches to that somehow. This was on a 07 Classic trailer, don’t know if same set up used for later models.
Thanks for the advice BruSchu and schodacbassman I’ll give those suggestions a try when I get back out to my boat.
Those two suggestions did not work. I still cannot get to the bolts that hold the winch to the trailer or the bolt I have to remove to un-anchor the existing strap or install the new one. I’ve included a few pictures.
The Fulton winches are great but a bit of a pain to replace the strap. You do not have to remove the winch. Start by pulling the winch strap as far down as you can, and then remove the drum axle bolt. you should be able to then pull the drum carefully out of the back by forcing open the black plastic body. Just take your time and it will come out. (unfortunately even Fulton does not show this on their website, or mounting instructions) You will then see the bolt holding the strap to the drum. Replace the strap and put it back together. I have done this 3 times in 20 years without damaging mine. Hope this helps.

The winch was installed underneath the step with the four bolts therefore it can and must be removed to service the strap.
I would recommend that you consider upgrading to the Folton F-2 winch. A few bucks well spent
