You can buy alot of gas and oil for the money a new 4s engine would cost.  My opinion is you will never recover the money you spend on the new engine unless you keep it many many years.  In 5 years or more, selling or getting trade value for a 30-35 year old boat with an engine that is likely out of warranty won’t get you anywhere close to what you paid for the new engine.  With the new engine, performance will be somewhat better on both ends, but not significantly.  I’d hold on to the money and save more to purchase another boat in a few years.  Good luck with your decision.

Thanks Phil!  I’m retired so the chances of me selling/trading the boat (new or old motor) are slim to none.  I figure that I can physically bass fish for maybe another 10 to 12 years, so I’m looking at it as an investment in fun.  Probable should have left the “is it worth the money” question out.  LOL

I have a 1999 Pantera Classic.  Just repowered it with a Suzuki.  I wanted a new Bobcat but $43000 is way more than $15000.  So I repowered mine.  If the transom is good, put on it what you want and keep on fishing.

I am pulling the trigger and getting a new 2023 200 Pro XS.  Yes Phil I know I will never recover the money spent on this boat and I do value your opinion.  But, with that said with the money I’ve already spent on updating the electronics I’m already “underwater” on the value anyways.  And I love this boat and hope to use it till my health will not allow me to fish!  At 70 years old and retired,  I have no plans on selling or trading this boat as I have already tried and was only offered what I had invested in the new electronics.  And the last 2 fishing trips I’ve had to load the boat on the trailer with the trolling motor (not fun).  The Merc 200 EFI has been a great engine but it’s age is beginning to show.   So, again I’m asking what does Basscat or anybody who has done this for suggestions on props, engine height, etc.  I’m leaning towards a 24″ Tempest or a 23″ Fury at this point.
