Running your boats with hearing aids

Bob, I leave mine at home or in the van. I have pretty bad hearing from years of nail-guns, skil-saws and such but the possibility of losing my behind-the-ear hearing aids just freaks me out so I do my best to listen to and converse with my co-angler who (bless her heart!) is my wife of 50 years. The only thing she really wants me to hear is: “Get the net!”

Just thinking out loud because I don’t wear them but could you slip on a set of ear muffs while running?

I’m in the process of getting them now and planned to leave them back at camp when fishing.  On the water with lack of background noise I can usually hear just fine.  Add back ground or music on the TV and I’m lost.  That and like most men, can’t hear real high pitched noise but can hear a bass break water 500 feet away.   I put off getting aids as long  as I could stand it but tired of missing out on a lot going on.   I’ll add that I’ll echo Dr. Ward  (who used to be a frequent contributor on this board and an otolaryngologist  not to mention a damn funny guy) any time we are running we should be wearing some type of ear protection.  Once there is hearing loss, there is no getting it back with out mechanical help.  I find just pulling a buff over my hears provided some protection by directing wind over my ears vs. blowing inside.  Plugs are better but haven’t carried those.  Interested in hearing from others with aids and their experience.

I should’ve added that I always wear ear plugs when running the boat. I’ve been riding a Vespa since 2010 which now has 20,000 miles and wind noise has always bothered me and I know it’s harmful so, ear plugs are a necessity whenever wind noise is present!

I lost one at 70+. Fortunately, the VA Issued me a replacement.  What I do now is use a “Buff” to cover the ears.  I don’t like not wearing em.
