Sabre owners step inside, trandsducer question

You really want a shoot-thru-hull transducer for running. Most mount DI/SI type transducers off the jack plate to avoid drilling more holes. Works great for SI/DI, not so great for running at speed. But if you get the right kind of finder, you can run a shoot-through and SI/DI transducer at the same time and choose the one to use depending on what you are doing.2008 Pantera Classic2014 Mercury Pro XS 200

Another thought of mine is to leave the ol 718 in the dash and use it for running and mount the 997 somewhere on the side of the console.

Thats basically my configuration. I have a 787c flush-mounted. I run it in the old “flasher” mode which gives a very quick depth update. I have a 998ci SI on a ram to the right, with the SI transducer mounted off of the jack plate. 958ci DI up front with ducer on TM.Not a big fan of the RAM mount in this setup. The big t-handle is way big. I removed that immediately and rely on a nut with a wrench to torque it down. Avoids full throttle skinning my knuckles.2008 Pantera Classic2014 Mercury Pro XS 200

Sherms mount will take the 718 out of the dash. As long as its there – youre mounting your big graph with a RAM or similar. Your DI/SI transducer will easily mount to the inside of the right drop leg of the jackplate. Mount it to the transom is no issue – just silicone the holes well before you screw it in. Youll run a Y cable before the new unit. The Y will take its 2D depth information from the in-hull transducer and its DI/SI info from the big transducer. As soon as you plane the boat youll lose any information from the transom mount transducer – itll be out of the water running. Trying to use the big transom mount to do 2D as well will require you to mount it at or below pad level where it can maintain water contact at speed. Thats a huge way to introduce handling and running issues. Theres a very good reason the vast majority of boaters run an in-hull shoot-thru transducer for 2D imaging – it just works much better.

I will have to mount yo the transom. The 2011 Sabre vision that I am buying doesnt have a jack plate.

All of this Y cable stuff is new to me. This brings up another question, if I choose to go forward with the Sherms mount, which is the way I am leaning, can I use a “Y cable” with the existing 2d transducer and a hull transducer for the SI & DI?I can what I am asking is, will the current 718 2D transducer that is in the hull work with a 999? If it does, can someone please send me a link to where I could purchase the Y cable?JSTEW disregard my email, I sent it before seeing your reply above. I appreciate everyones help.

Sorry – replied to the email before coming to the board. Yes – the 2D shoot thru transducer works fine with the 999. The Y cable is an easy order part from Humminbird that splits the signals and you keep good 2D when running. Call Sherms tomorrow about the mount. Each one is custom made and he often gets slammed – read wait to be built. Youll want to ask how long the turnaround will be when you call.

Thanks 08 Sabre, I have one on order. Now I have to edit on Sherm to get caught up up the point of building some mounts.
