I am thinking of changing from a Atlas to a Sea Star Jackplate. Can anyone running a Sea Star share there experience. It looks like the Sea Star has a couple of additional features that the others don’t offer.
SeaStar and Bobs are suggested plates by BCB. Atlas sales are significantly more. The ProTap on SeaStar is a very good system.
Only question that comes to mind is can they do a 6-bolt version to match the holes in your BCB transom?
Yes they do, though you might have to notch (slot file) the holes slightly to align existing holes. There seems to be some variation there.
I have the original Detwiler version -2007- works good, but needs greased often and the fittings are a PITA to get to

That is not relative to the current design. Everything is changed on the new SeaStar.
I’ve got a Sea Star and love it. It’s all stainless steel rods. No plastic. Very fast too.
I ended up with a defective sea star jack plate, 5080R, and have some issues getting replacement. Just found out that the standard 5080R is not a compatible replacement and it needs to be specifically 5080R-BC, for bass cat. Just an FYI. It took 2 days on the phone with Sea Star, now Dometic, and they finally determined the bass cat compatible is a specific mounting bracket design and I am finally getting the correct one shipped. Fingers crossed. The warranty people have taken notes and will discuss with the higher ups to add the “BC” to the model number sticker to avoid confusion in the future.
UPDATE: Starting week 3 without a boat. Sea star (Dometic) warranty contact person Trevor will not return my email or my voice message. He assured me the correct 5080R-SRK-BC jack plate would be overnighted, and of course it was not delivered and Trevor will not answer my request for a tracking number so I can follow the shipment. Question is-will Bob’s machine 8″ setback for bass cat bolt right on with the existing transom holes for the original sea star jack plate without drilling more holes? I am beyond frustrated at this point. This is a 2023 Cougar FTD that’s been in the water less than a dozen times. A lot of money for it to be sitting in a service shop and can’t fish. Thanks for any info.
BCBnewb,
It is our understanding that a plate is in transit to you and this has been managed. If t you have further issues, please let us know here. SeaStar is a good plate and those folks are good people. There are several good plates on the market, and the two we suggest are Dometic SeaStar and Bob’s.
On the original detwiller.Mine is stuck in the up position.I can’t get to the Zerk fittings to grease them. Not sure if this is the problem.I’m getting clicking at the new relays I bought. Only get motor sound when I tap actuator with a screw driver. Any help?
There are multiple types of Detwiler plates over time. The tubes will rotate and keep the zerks from being accessible, you just make an effort to twist them back in place where the zerk can be reached.
And we are not sure which actuator your tapping, though it sounds like a relay.
