Sounding Beep

Yesterday while taking my boat out for the first time this year after running about 5 minutes the steady beep started. The motor had a steady stream coming out the back and I took the cowling off while idling and the oil reservoir was full. I loosened the cap and a little oil came out. All the while the beeper kept sounding. I shut the motor down and in a few minutes restarted without the steady beep. In about 5 minutes it started again. Back in the cove where the ramp is I shut it down for a couple minutes. After restarting I never got much above idle and it never beeped again. It is a Mercury XR6 2005 model with probably less than 100 hours. I dont have a heat gauge nor a water pressure gauge. I am going to replace the impellers. Any other suggestions?

Mine did the same thing last year. After replacing the water impeller in the lower unit I did not have any more problems. I would suggest adding a water psi. gauge, and anytime you get below 8 or 10 psi it is time to change out the impeller again. They only last about 2 years with regular use.

Thanks for the reply, Ill change it this weekend and hope for the best. I am going to Table Rock next week and dont want problems.

Water in the fuel and Ethanol separation. You have water in the fuel filter most likely.

I have never put any ethanol in the tank and have always kept it topped off with Stabil Marine. Could I still have water in the fuel? Should I change the fuel filter?

It sounds like water to me. I had the same problem about 3 weeks ago, my horn was different but I have an opti. not sure if the warning horns are different.

most all fuel has some ethanol in it now. Ethanol is used now in place of MTBE, and it, “the ETH” is just used as a replacement. It does not have to be reported as being in the gas on the pump. (like gasohol would) (the amount is no where near the 10% that would be considered gasohol)there are cases where mtbe is still used but they are small. If the impellers dont fix the problem do I need to replace the fuel filter? Or, will it run the water through? Or, what is the best fix? Thanks for all the responses.

On an XR6 we cant remember if the filter in 05 was a canister or on a VST pump. If you have a small black filter on the right side, with one wire connected to the bottom, then pull that sender on the bottom and drain the fuel into a cup. You will see water if it is there. This is not a water pump as heat is a solid beep. It is either water in fuel or oil.
