Southco latch upgrade for older models – how to thread

I used some bday and Christmas money to splurge on new latches for my 00 Jaguar. The below is based on my experiences and is offered for those w/ older model cats who are considering the Southco latch upgrade. After pulling my old latches I discovered that the hole for my old latch is smaller then the 2.5" hole needed for the new latches and a few of the metal plates extend to far and impede the new lock. You can see the metal in the below pics (first one through the hole and the second one w/ the lid open). The holes were an easy fix using a 2.5" hole saw. I just took my time and increased the hole size w/ no problems at all. The top pic was taken after increasing the hole size. Note: I believe newer model cats have the larger perkos in 2.5" holes which allows for easier one for one swap.To fix the metal plates I simply drilled out the rivet, cleaned them up, and turned them around. I did this on both plates in my port rod locker (I didnt have to adjust my starboard or center lockers). For my day box I had to drill new holes in the plate to create the necessary space. I reinstalled the plates using rivets and a dab of silicone on the top of the plate. Before install I used a dremel tool to grind off any sharp or rough areas. Rod locker after reinstall of the plate (no longer interferes w/ the new lock and still provides the support): To install the locks, put the rubber gasket around the lock and insert through the top of the lid.From the bottom, add the metal ring.Add the support bracket and screw in place. Due to the thickness of the fiberglass lids I was only able to use the provided 1" screws on the day box lid. All others required 1 Ľ" screws (1 ˝" screws would fit too). You can see the difference in the next two pics. The first one is the rod locker and the longer screws were needed. The second one is the day box and used the provided screws. Notice how the lock fits into the support brace better on the thinner day box lid. Then screw on the provided nut, slide the locking arm in place, and secure with the other nut. Adjust accordingly to give a snug fit and you are done. I may replace the bottom nut w/ stainless locking nut if I find they back themselves off.For original Jag owners, the rod locker tackle shelf provides a challenge to the forward lock. There isnt enough space between the shelf and metal bracket for the locking arm to comfortably move. I dont know if there is a shorter arm available, but absent of finding one, I plan on cutting off some of the tip of the arm. Doing so would allow the arm to fit under the metal plate w/in the confines of the tackle trey. These latches are pricey, but I really like the way they pull the lid down when closing. Given the cost, I only did my front latches w/ the intention of doing the rest next year. I think they dress up the boat nicely. I hope this helps.
