Sportmaster vs torque master gear case

A good question for P.A. perhaps ? Is there any difference in hole shot performance between the two ? I have been told that the TorqueMaster was quicker out of the hole , but with the same gear ratio that doesnt sound right .

Sport master has different gears than the torque master. There were some bcbs experimented with years ago and for the most part did not work due to the poor hole shots. Therefore, not as good as torque master

Sportmaster and Torquemaster have the same gear ratio on most of the large cases. The small cases have a variation of gears common. The difference has little to do with stability and hole shot. The longer case has a higher drag coefficient and thus Sportmaster cases are slower unless your running over 85 MPH.

hole shot has “NOTHING” to do w/ the lowers just like stated above. the measurement of the lowers according to what i have seen is even the same. the difference that i understand is that the case has a slightly different angle to it that allows the torque (from the horse power) to be used for the added performance that the boat and driver have the ability to squeeze from the boat/motor combo.it would take a “very” skilled driver to get the absolute maximum out of these new boat/motor combos w/ the standard lower much less w/ the pretty grey bottom end. my 09 Puma is capable of a tad over 80mph (not me at the wheel, forget that crap) and it has the Verado lower or all black bottom. spend the extra if it makes you sleep better or looks better going down the road.

My 250xs has the SportMaster , but I also have a good TorqueMaster that I could use if I wanted to make the change……not looking for added top end or cool looks . Both lower units are black as some torquemasters were black a couple a years ago. Just considering if I would get a better hole shot.

There were no Sportmaster cases in black for 20″. The TM case was done in black originally.

Now Im confused. The LU on my 2010 ( Manufactured in 09 ) is black and has a longer cavitation plate . a thinner skeg below the bullet and a smaller diameter prop shaft than the one Im calling a TorqueMaster. ( black / short cavitation plate / large prop shaft ) I thought this was a SportMaster…….so what is it called ? BTW , both have water pick up in front of the bullet nose as well as above the bullet.

That just the original case before the Verado Style, some might call it a Fleetmaster though its not an FM case.

it would be best to contact Mercury direct as they have great customer service as does BassCat. the Torque Master also has a little extra fin above the water intake holes I believe. it is supposed to “funnel” the water into the holes better. I think some of this is simply snake oil but im just a stupid HVAC salesman
