starter battery going dead

I have a new trojan starter battery that keeps going dead as the boat sits in my driveway. It takes a recharge and is fine when on the water, but after a week or so of inactivity, the battery is completely dead. I occasionally leave some of the compartment lids open to air them out and was wondering if the courtesy lights were staying on and killing the battery slowly or if there was another reason I was missing. Boat is an 06 Puma. Thanks.

I also have a new trojan batt.
Works great.
You have to keep your charger plugged in between trips.
The first thing i do when parking boat is to plug in;
aalso the last thing I do before driving to lake is unplug.

Keeping your charger plugged in all the time shouldnt be the answer. I have charged mine and let them sit for weeks at a time and its still ready to go when I take it out. Its either something staying on like you said, or a bad battery. Start looking.

That’s right Chris,

There is a drain somewhere or a bad battery.

An ampmeter is going to be required to figure it out.

The drain is more than parasitic, as your cranking battery should last about 4-7 weeks parked.

Would leaving a rod locker or a few compartment lids open for a few days do it? The main power switch is off, but I notice the courtesy lights go on when I open the lids. Do they stay on as long as the lids are open and draw off the main battery?

DWA.. The batts will go dead with the lids open, and courtesy lights on.

If you need to leave the lids open prop them with a plano tray, or whatever, to leave them open an inch or two. In that case the mercury switched won’t activate the lights.

Q to Basscat: Why do the mercury switches in 06 activate the lights without master power?

The lights are activated without the master power switch on because of the burglar alarm.

My compartment lights turn off in roughly 10-15 minutes with the lids left open. I don’t know if there is much current draw when they are off and the mercury switch is saying the lid is open but that might be your culprit.

I would definitely try and eliminate that as an issue, keep’em closed or as someone said just prop them open a little and see if you still have the drained battery.

Good luck, this stuff can be a pain to track down…
