Ill echo what gasbasser stated. I managed commercial office buildings for many years and can confirm you shouldnt use soap/cleaner on carpet. The water and the agitation by commercial carpet cleaner, at home model, or good old hand scrubbing (scrubbing the carpet to loosen the dirt) is what gets them clean. The vacuum action removes the loosened dirt suspended in the water. Ive seen more carpet made into a streaky mess by folks not trained to clean them then I care to think about. Best thing you can do to maintain carpet so it looks good for years is vacuum (dry) frequently and clean with clear water no more then twice a year. May have to spot clean on occasion in between to address spills. On the boat I just take a hose and flood it. Get out the old brush and go at it. I do it in 3 sections (deck, floor, aft deck) flooding, scrubbing, and using a wet vac on each section. You want to wet vac as soon as you can after scrubbing to get dirt out with water while still suspended. Its also a good idea to do it when the wife isnt around cause she will be after you to do the house when you get done with the boat if you let her see how nicely you cleaned the boat carpet…..
