It sounds to us like your engine is too high. Try lowering your engine about 1/2″ and see what that does to your steering torque. Also disconnect the end rod tie bar on the steering cables, and see if they both move independently. We have seen a cable break and show an issue like this. We do not suggest hydraulic steering as a replacement on cable models, and your is more than likely a set up issue. BCB
My 97 classic is very hard to turn to the left also. But it is hard to turn at any speed. It is a new anti-feedback rack system bought about 2 years ago. I have taken the cables loose from the motor, helm turns fine and so does the motor. Let me know if this is the same problem, I am confused?
Heres my take: stainless is certainly more rust resistant. And if you have rust problems, that might be a solution (I personally have a better solution that uses fluid rather than cables, but thats another issue…) The cables run inside some sort of teflon/polymer housing, and this thing wears over time, no matter what kind of cable you use. And as it wears, the cable itself can begin to contact the housing, which causes friction and slop. I am not familiar with the brand you mentioned, so Id do a little research to make sure they are reliable and are of high quality… You should also replace the helm as the internal gears that engage the cable end also wear, and slop there is very bad since the cable can actually slip as those gear teeth wear… That said, personally I prefer hydraulic steering, which eliminates the cable, the friction they have, and the NFB “gear bind” is gone as well. You can literally run down the river at 80+ and not get arm cramps…2008 Pantera Classic2014 Mercury Pro XS 200
OT57 has this close, though once the outer sleeve wears the cable then separates the winding. Once the cables begin to tension, the damage is already done. We would not put SS cables in ourselves, though no real reason. We think if you prelube the cable before install and keep pressurized lubrication on the cables you can get ten years on a set. The outside windings are the failure point.
May be time to replace the entire system which consists of the cables and the helm. BCB reccommends you replace both instead of just replacing the cables, that way everything is new, and you should be trouble free for many more years. D. , Stationary Cables, $350.00, , || Tilt Cables, $425.00, , || The kit includes a new helm, new bezel, and dual rack steering cables. Plus … The Tilt Kit also includes a Tilt Helm, and a Tilt Mechanism. , || This is @ BCB parts and accessories page, and they can fix you right up. There is no cutting of the cables involved, and you can fish the new ones in while taking the old ones out i would think,,,,D.Last edited by dbasketman on April 29th, 2008, 6:55 pm, edited 1 time in total.
Hey how did I miss them LOL, I went to the parts page first and didnt see them, I also went to FAQ board and typed in Steering Cables and got some info but not much. I am going to check the motor for stiffness tonight but I believe I will be ordering the Tilt Col. 73s series in the morning. From there I guess Ill just start upbolting things blindly unless some more info shows up. One thing I did read was and Oiler System for the cables to due pre maintanince, anyone know where to buy this. or how to make like suggested in BCB note at the FAQ.
One last thing if I am replacing maybe its time to go Hyd. I seen this system on ebay new for $1,105.00 Pro Sport Tilt O/B Hydraulic Steering Packages Any Thoughts? Also I dont know if it me or my boat but I never experinced Chine Walk even when I could turn my wheel when idling along, with one finger @ 70mph its a solid ride. My buddy (passed on now) bought a 98 PII 4yrs ago upgrade from his 88 Pantera and @ 68 it would walk it had Hyd steering. He was a much more experince drive than I . Does Hyd matter over cables when it comes to chine walking.

Well I disconnected the steering rod from the engine last night and you can move the engine from side to side with one finger and the steering is still stiff. I guess my only option/decision is put new cables/helm in or go to Hyd Steering. Tried to figure out how to run the cables and can only come up with the OLD ones have to come out going forward (rear to front) and the NEW have to go in going from the front to rear, so I see no way to use the OLD to pull in the NEW, because of the black bar (I guess I would call that the rack) at the helm. UNLESS I am missing something??????????????????? I maybe reading too much into installing the cables but almost seems like Hyd Steering would be Easier/Faster to install and Faster put me on the water sooner. lol lol
If that is the case, wrap the ends in cloth or carpet and tie a strong cord to the old set and pull a pull cord through. Then you can use the cord to pull the new ones in. Hope this helps.
Well I just ordered the cables/helm from BCB $444.00 total, I guess I will figure out how to install them when they get here. Im sure this will be a trip installing these stiff cables two at a time and if they will need adjustments will be the real test. Just hoping I dont have to move/remove the 200hp merc. I do have a Manual Jack Plate on my 98 PII I also see the west marine has the Cable Buddy II for $41.00 headed there now to pick up a set. The Kitty needs to be purring again soon. Should of did a better job of planning at the end of the season last year on this one. The cables could of been installed earlier this month when she first came home Maybe one less wax job while I was waiting lol. NOW is not the time. OH Well !!! lol lol lol Once it done Ill be happy again. At least everything else worked great first time out. Well except the New Bow mounted LCX 37, have temp issues not showing correct 30degrees off used the Transduer from the LCX 18C from last year so dont know yet what up, and havent figured out how to share Waypoints yet. Dont have NEMA 2000 hooked up only using NEMA 0183 between the LCX111C and the LCX 37C More reading maybe needed here. but so far I havent found anything Thick Book. lol
It is in the menu and you can turn on Waypoint Sharing. BCB

BCB Yes, that part I did first thing and have set both units LCX 111C and LCX 37C to share by checking the boxes and turning on, the 37C at this point does not read the Waypoints on the 111C. Once I got home I started thinking maybe it wont read any past waypoints and only new ones saved from this point on but that doesnt sound right so I thought it may have to have NEMA 2000 hooked up. Still reading.. Thick Book and I have not found any info yet.
Get with Scott or Bobby in Bass Cat parts. They will be able to help you with what you need. They can sell you what you need.
