I have been through this issue before, and BCB recommended that I do not add torque tab because it is an accomodation for an improper setup. Your solution will likely be to lower the motor in 1/8″ to 1/4″ increments until you are comfortable with the amount of torque. Hope that helps. Others may give more details.KentKent Charles 2002 Pantera Classic & 200 Yamaha VMax
DPT2005 is correct in that the torque tab is not the solution.Lowering the motor or changing the propeller is the answer.Steering wheel torque is a result of surfacing propeller blade. So you need more blade surface in the water, no matter which was you achieve that.Lowering the engine is simple if you have a jackplate. If you do not then a Sabre should be up one hole on the transom for most rigs, and it could be flat. Though if you move it all the way down, a bumper must be added to the left side of the splashwell to prevent the steering from impacting the splashwell on some engines, not all. Seem if you can lower it in 1/4 to 1/2 inch increments. BCB
sorry, am i not thinking of the same thing, called a service person and the suggested adjusting the tab. what did i do wrong and is that like a “temp” fix (what i did)? it took the torque off of the wheel. will i need to end up putting it back to where it was. of course, i will answer no more questions after this.It is very rare that the torque tab on the engine removes torque. We have many times taken them off to prove they are not functional on a Mercury engine. The individual never knew we removed them and often though we had adjusted them. They are functional on a Evinrude or Johnson. They are not on a Yamaha. BCB
I have an 06 Sabre and had alot of steering torque on the left side. I lowered it about 1/4″ if that, and it helped alot. That is the only way to help it without adding torque tabs. Just experiment with lowering the motor 1/4″, but mark the orignal postion with a marker or whatever you want to use, then go from there, assuming you have a jackplate on it.
selm1I believe you were referring to the rudder piece (I dont know the correct name) on most motors. This is different from the torque tab. The torque tab is a metal piece that is riveted or welded to the skeg. The torque tab is not recommended, but I believe most put that rudder piece pushed mostly to the right. You are not incorrect in what you said, but I think we are talking about 2 different things. Your rudder is fine where you have it. No harm done. It is very rare that the trim tab on the engine removes torque. We have many times taken them off to prove they are not functional on a Mercury engine. The individual never knew we removed them and often though we had adjusted them. They are functional on a Evinrude or Johnson. They are not on a Yamaha. We would not worry about the issue of adding comments. The instance in which it could help, is on an engine mounted on the transom without a jackplate. We have never found the trim tab on a jackplated engine to gain from turning it.Lowering the engine will reduce the surfacing blade. BCB
We have an 06 Sabre with 175 opti, you need to have forearms like Popeye to drive ours. We have lowered and raised but still didnt make easier. Now we have added more steering fluid because it was also low. “I was told to trim down in curves that would help because all boats are hard to steer to left”.Never had this problem with last boat which was faster. Hopefully it is the low fluid that is causing this problem.
Low fluid will not cause this, and the fluid is low for a reason. It must be leaking somewhere and will need to be found. If the lowering does not help, then does it have torque on the trailer? If so then perhaps it is a faulty steering helm? If it does not have steering torque while sitting on the trailer, then you may need some propeller swapping. We may be able to help there on a loaner to help you figure out what you may need. The 175 props on the list of those we have set up would give you an idea of a starter propeller. There should not be excess torque on a Sabre, unless your skeg is reverse bent? Though that probably is not the case. Let us know if you need some help! BCB
Steering Torque is the pressure that you must hold left to keep the wheel from spinning right. You do not want neutral, though only a slight pull against your hand. BCB
can you still feel the torque with the hyd steering??? MKG
yes you can, it is not power, it is a hydraulic slave system and jsut like a jack gets tight when it is under pressure, so will the steering. BCB
slight resistance at the left in straight runs
Phil, If there is 2 handed resistance and lots of torque would someone want to move their jackplate and if so I assume you would raise it? At what point is this torque measured? When you feel you are at maximum trim and speed or as you are WOT and reaching top speeds and still triming it? Thanks
Lower it, not raise the jackplate. Raising it will make it worse. Measure the torque on the upper end of the RPM/throttle/trim range. Judd Lasiter
