I recently repowered a 2000 basscat sabre with a Suzuki 150 4 stroke. I started with a 27p Suzuki prop-it would be 25p Mercury- top
speed was 56MPH and RPM were 5100. Ideally RPMS are 6000 so we dropped the prop to a 25p and it will touch 6k but top speed is 52-54mph. I will say I don't know what the boat ran with the Mercury that was in it as it blew up in the first 5 minutes of me buying the boat. Are these speeds what I should expect? Everything I've ever read about the sabre is it's a 60+ mph boat? Any suggestions for getting it there? I have a jackplate I can play around with.
Lower engine heights and four blade propellers seem to help a. Suzuki perform better. However it will not run with a Mercury or Yamaha, as Suzuki runs a little lower on actual horsepowers.
like 4.5in. I’m sorry I have no idea how to measure rooster tail height. It looks normal compared to the other boats I’ve driven.
my thought was to raise the jackplate up to 3.5 and see it runs with both props. You can definitely over trim it as I can run 5400-5600 rpms and run 56 then trim it up a little more to get the Rpm’s closer to 6k but I lose 3-4 mph

I knew I would lose a little speed for what should be a lot more reliability going from the Mercury to a Suzuki. Ill talk to my dealer see if I can swap it out for a 4 blade to see what happens.

Yeah I’d try raising it to lessen some drag as long as water psi is good. The rooster tail should be around the top of outboard(long/low) for max forward acceleration. The Suzuki has very steep gearing, so 4-blade may help with hole shot, but typically a 4-blade has more drag from surface area and therefore a slower top speed than 3-blade. On dad’s old 19’ Pantera Classic DC that had a 2-stroke 150 with 2.08 gearing we did run a Trophy Plus 4-blade and it would do over 60mph fwiw.
I moved the jackplate to 3.5 and went back to the 27p prop. The whole shot improved a ton, RPMs now top out at 5800, which is closer. That’s with boat trimmed up and really driving it. The water was rough so that didn’t help. I have noticed now and before I moved the jackplate, there seems to be a better sweet spot at 3/4 throttle. At times, with less trim and throttle the boat will hit 5800-6000 RPMs and actually run faster.I’m going to change props back to the 25p this weekend and see how it runs. Then play with jackplate in 1/4″ increments and see how it responds. My biggest issue is that when I repowered the boat the dealer didn’t change out the water pressure gauge and it’s not working. He told me I was running new technology and didn’t need it. Not sure how I feel about that.
