Talon purchase running into issues can anyone help?
I ordered 2 10 Talons and all mounting hardware for a 2008 Cougar with a Detwiler all in one Hydraulic Jack plate which does not have side mounting holes pre-drilled and I have no desire in drilling the Jack Plate. After noting this it has quickly come to attention that the universal brackets that I am being sent will not work. I have to have Sandwich brackets but the dealer does not no for sure what will work with my boat. I have seen posts about 9 inch set backs, 3 inch set backs and 6 inch set backs.. This boat has the BCB boarding ladder swim ladder if you will and the before mentioned Jack Plate does anyone know for sure what will work so I can get the right ones coming quickly and get this install done as scheduled? Thanks
I dont know if these will fit a talon or not but I have two of the sandwich style brackets for power pole. Models PK-M-2-6 port and starboard sides. They are black. One was purchased with boat and the other a later model so one has holes in the plate like what is shown on the website but thats something I myself dont really notice once theyre on. I have a boarding ladder like BCB uses now and with a homemade bracket cause I have an older style Puma. The inside of the ladder sits about 25″ from center of motor and the pole just did clear it.If you think they will work and are interested Ill make you a deal on them. I can take pictures if needed.I just took them off Saturday upgraded to the tighter fitting new brackets that mount to side of slide master jack plate.
Thanks for the offer but I am looking for guarantees at this point.. willing to pay but want it to be right and work.. would love to see some pictures of some Talons on Cougars if there are any out there.. Supplier says one in Texas with 2 on it.. Red? Anyone seen them? Close ups? Thanks
Have you tried calling Mr. Jones at Jones Trolling Motor Services? He is very knowledgeable about the Talons, and knows Cats as well. He may even see your post here and give you an answer as he frequents this forum.
The sandwich brackets are no longer supported by Mercury and you should drill the side of your Detwiler, which is what we do here at the factory now for Power Poles. The universal mount is a nice piece though we do not believe it will not allow the ladder to function. It will be close and depends on how you set the pieces on the universal bracket. BCB does not sell Talons at this time. They played with the original design and eventually opted to no longer offer Talon.
Ok well now I am even more in a pinch.. The drilled Jack plate will set these in about another 3 inches and it does not appear they will allow clearance of the ladder at all can you confirm BCB that it will clear the ladder is about 5 inches further back then the rub rail… by using the universal sandwich bracket between the motor and jack plate it appears you can pick up the 3 inches from that mounting point and with some angle more you can clear the ladder. I am fine with and understand it will not allow the ladder to be used I just dont want to have to take the ladder off.. Catdude28 my purchase is from Jones but he is unable to make a determination .. the ladder is one issue.. drilling the jack plate was another but even if I did want to drill it there is an issue of about 3 inches you lose when mounting to the side of the jack plate as opposed to mounting a sandwich bracket between the motor and Jack plate..unless the brackets have different angles and one angles more than the other on the pivot. On my 2008 Cougar my jack plate the detwiler all in one is just about 1/2 inch in further than the rub rail if you go straight to the outside of the boat from where the motor bolts to the Jack Plate.. I need about 5 inches or a bit more to clear the ladder by the time you install the Talon.
BCB when you say Mercury no longer supports the sandwich bracket are you saying they do not want you to use the new universal sandwich bracket which is identical to the Jack Plate side mount universal bracket except where it mounts and if so do you know why? that is the sandwich bracket .. this is the side bracket I have them listed back wards but you can see the comparison
Drove my boat today with the new style brackets that mount to side of jack plate and fit tighter to the boat. HUGE difference from the sandwich style. Not as much drag in water from takeoff, can mount pole a little lower, and no wobble.
