Tires

I have a 2003 Cougar FTD with what I believe to be the original Firestone Firehawk Indy 500s. The treads are fine and there are no air leaks but the top edge of the sidewalls have some cracking all the way around. I am getting ready to take a long trip and just want to get opinions as to whether or not I should go ahead and replace them. I would love to get some new bigger rims and if I need new tires then I may get the new rims as well. Thanks

I would look at the load rating, so 4 tires with a 1900 lbs max load should have no problems with a 4500 pond boat motor and trailer. Still think Michelin is the best available.

Go with as heavy a sidewall as you can. The angles we put these tires under cause much more separation than we realize. Replaced my 2011 tires with 10 ply 225 Loadstar trailer tires and have never had one of these boats handle as well on the road. Eager to see how these new tires perform on my 12

Well from the majority of rubber I have looks at, now it does not matter if it is 2,4,6,8,10 all sidewas are two-ply. Guess we will try some 8 ply and see what happens!

Not a PII, but my single axle P4 has ST225/75R15 10PR Triangle TR643 radial 2800 lbs at 80 psi, hope that helps.

The P4 has special tires and the P2 uses a different Caslisle tire standard.

Stay away from Load range C trailer tires, especially if you pull at interstate speeds and above. When I replace my tires, Im going back with a passenger tire. Probably the Cooper Cobras.

My new BC trailer came with General Altamax RT tires on it. The trailer rides great.

BCB was having trouble with the Cobras a few years back and changed to Mastercraft Avenger I think it was and now to Generals? Anyway, I have my original Cobras on my 07 and love them. I know I should replace them even though they only see maybe 500 miles a year but they are still going good so I havent.

I have 205/75/15 now but about to put some 215/70/15s on. Not going back with ST tires. Not sure what brand yet but probably the General Altamax RT.

After one year with General tire we dont believe weve seen a single issue that wasnt self inflicted, or a mounting issue. Of course the true test of time will be in four or five years, after a hundred dozen pot holes, 300 curbings, 250 right wheel culvert hops and a dozen or more animal dodges, on the way to the lake before daylight.
