The fishing can be great in January. Weather will dictate what to do but you can figure on a trap bite, football jig, and crankbait to be working. If its cold there may be spoon fish and if its hot, spinnerbaits, jerkbaits and softplastics will work. Look for fish to be near creek and river channels or on main lake points. I have even found some great schools of staging fish suspending over 25 feet deep creek channels on about 8 ft down. Again look at your surface temps and let it dictate what you do. Over 50 degrees I would be chunking a trap. Over 56 start looking in the bushes.
