Tow Vehicle

Going to sell my 00 4WD V8 Tundra, because I just purchased a 08 GMC, Sierra 1500 4WD Crew Cab, only 6 K on miles. It has the the Autotrac Transfer Case, Vortec 5.3L V8, H.D RR Auto Lock Differential, H.D. Trailering Equipment package. Was wondering if any one else is driving the same vehicle. I think I did ok to pull the P4 to the O.I. and down these long Texas highways.

Brewcat, I have a 07 Chevy Silverado Ex-Cab with the same mechanics as you listed pulling a 05 Classic. I know your P4 is a little heavier than my Classic but my truck pulls my Classic like it is not there. You will be fine with your new truck. Brian

brewcat, you should have no problems pulling your P4 with the rig that you purchased. I have pulled a Cougar, Puma, Cougar FTD and a P4 with a 2001, 2 wheel drive Chevy with the same motor and trailering package as you have without any problems. Also pulled the above with a 2001 2 wheel drive Tahoe with the same engine and trailering package. One of my sons pulls his P4 with a 2 wheel drive, 2008 Chevy Crew Cab with the same engine and trailering package without problems. Joe

I have that same exact truck in the king cab and I tow a 07 Puma with ease. Good on gas, you will love that truck. Good luck. Dan

Have the same truck except 08 model and it does fine. Pull 70 – 80 mph where ever I want to go. Gets about 11-12 pulling the boat and about 18-20 on HWY. 16 in town.

OK Tideman. Youre right as always. I cant read what the computer on the truck says and I cant divide miles by the amount of gas to fill the truck. Worm could probably get more if he didnt have to obey all the laws and didnt have to lug your big butt around. Go read your Humminbird manual or something. Better yet……………..go collect on some of your loans……………….something you know a little about!

Well dear Tidey, Having a few of these hanging around our shop they seem to get up to 23 on the highway and pulling aobut what Phil claims. In town we are experiencing up to 17.8 on 2wd model. Out of town the 4×4 series gets into the 19 ranges. We have a couple of Tahoe and Yukon models that do this also. The truck will do a fine job with that little motor and go plenty of miles with no service if it is like most.

Not at all the same model, but I tow with a 1999 GMC Sierra with 170,000 miles on her. 5.3 liter V8 and 3.73 gears and she runs like a top to this day. I dont have alot of electronic crap on the truck to break, but, this thing has been wonderfull. The only mechanical failure Ive had on the vehicle is a stuck rear brake Caliper. Other than that, its been routine maintenance for 10 years. Change the oil, filter, air filter, replace wiper blades, Belts, Tires and Battery. No B.S. here, just been a great truck. When it was new this truck would turn in 21 mpg on highway trips but now after Ive put some bigger tires and wheels on her, she gets 18-19 hwy and 12-14 pulling my Classic. My best towing MPG was 16 a few years ago going to Toledo Bend. Wont do that anymore but if you baby the throttle you will see some pretty good results. You will be very pleased with this Truck. Im sure it will pull it, but the longevity of your transmission is keeping it cool and servicing the fluid. If pulling (regardless of the weight) was gonna be done on a consistent basis, Id definitely insist on the cooler!!Remember: Most Salesmen are clueless about transmissions!!! They just know it will pull it up the road and back. But pulling in the heat of the day over the hills and valleys is another story…. Just saying…

I would say if your truck has the towing package you wont need a cooler. I have had several GM trucks, all with the towing package. To be honest, I have no clue if they had transmission coolers on them or not. Ive never had any issues with the transmissions pulling any of my Cats, or any other boat Ive owned for that matter.

I have owned Dodge, Ford, & Chevy. I never had a transmission problem with the Chevy. Dodge was a different story.Dan

If your towing is 2 hours or less, probably will never be an issue. A 10-15 hour drive, if frequent, maybe. The transmission was the only good thing I could say about my Chevy. So I would say that pulling your Cat at 160 your doing great. My 13 model F150, trans temp stays the same empty or with my Puma
